A French Commission to investigate the Thiaroye Massacre ?

Five days from the celebration commemorating 80 years since the Thiaroye: A French Massacre in Senegal, French parliamentarians called on Tuesday 26 November for the establishment of a commission of inquiry to shed light on the bloody chapter in the French colonial history in Senegal that is the Thiaroye Massacre. If the commission receives the green light, then the work will start in March 2025, when they could then summon and hear historians, descendants of the victims of the massacre, and more. As a refresher, on the night of 30 November to 1 December 1944, African soldiers who had who had fought alongside French people to liberate France of the Nazi menace, were shot by Frenchmen, for asking for their pay in Thiaroye, thus the Thiaroye massacre !

Like our Cameroonian brothers and sisters would say, “A quelle heure ?” (at what time?) or rather why now? How convenient! Or this is for show for the new government of Senegal, to act as if the French have taken note to please the new Senegalese government? They always wait for everyone to be dead to ask for and open bogus commissions that will end nowhere… did you see our dear Senegalese Tirailleurs who begged for many years, and only until most of them had died did they get some recognition from the French, At Last: Senegalese Tirailleurs now allowed to receive their pension while living in Senegal. We do remember the British Government apologizes for Mau Mau atrocities or that commission created for the French genocide in Cameroon.

To learn more, check out RFI. Do you think this commission will amount to anything? Will it even be accepted in the French parliament?

Lets wait and see. These Europeans have committed unspeakable atrocities against us, AFRICANS. Now they are telling us to be mindful of the Chinese and its Muslim population, which may not be true. my interest is the brutality of Europeans, especially the French, Belgians, British against us Africans.

    1. Thanks Joseph. Let’s wait and see indeed. They are full of words… always empty words … Why should the Senegalese, in this case, expect anything different from the French government which killed the men who served to free France from the Nazi menace, simply for asking their due?

  2. I didn’t know about this atrocity until I saw Ousmane Sembene’s Camp de Thiaroye movie a few years ago which enraged me when I found out it was based on a true story. It’s like how Black American soldiers not only didn’t get GI Bill benefits like their white compatriots, but some were lynched in uniform when they got back.

Good Day Dr. Y, Thank you so much for bringing this very important news keeping us abreast of continent-wide developments in the struggle for justice in the face of historical and contemporary colonial atrocities.

I know what you mean when you question the motivation and efficacy of these ‘too-little-too-late’ type inquiries… As a ZImbabwean living in Zimbabwe, I had no idea of that massacre in Senegal. Its shocking and depressing how many genocides have been committed against the global Black family and the brazen impunity with which they have been committed knowing we have no recourse for any meaningful response. The root of the problem is that we are constantly addressing injustices perpetrated against us via the mechanisms of a legal system they created specifically to defend their own crimes.

Do you know that the ICC (International Criminal Court) has only ever tried and convicted Africans? Never a European, American or Asian defendant? We need the courage to declare ourselves independent from their bogus judicial system.

    Thanks again,

    Keep the fire burning, Netsayi

    1. Dear Netsayi,

Thank you for your comment. It is so true. It is depressing to learn about the number of genocides which have been committed against the global Black family and the brazen impunity of the perpetrators.
As for the ICC, this is the issue I was raising when Gbagbo, Ble Goude, and others were being sent to the Hague… it is a court made specifically to judge and condemn Africans; it does not seem to apply to any other group. Indeed, Africans need to declare themselves independent of their bogus judicial system, as well as their fake “international” community which only serves their interests, and vetoes or impedes the progress of others.
In order for us to finally get respected, we have to become strong, and demand respect. Even though respect should be absolutely normal for every human being, unfortunately respect is not given, it is earned.
